Ship the Thing: How Direct Sellers Can Overcome Perfectionism and Start Seeing Results with Text Marketing

Why 80% Done is Better Than 0% Perfect

Ever spent more time thinking about something than it would actually take to do the thing? 🙋 You’re not alone.

This week during a mastermind call, we celebrated Rebecca, a student who finally set up her customer follow-up system for her new company. She had been thinking about it and meaning to do it for six months. But when she finally sat down and committed to making it happen? It took 15 minutes. That’s it. She knocked it out inside her Project Broadcast account and felt a wave of relief.

And that got me thinking about something I read in a newsletter this week:

What if this week, you stopped obsessing over that one project you’ve been working on and instead, just shipped the thing?

What if you put it out at 80%, let it breathe, and tweaked it as you go?

You’ll get feedback faster. You’ll overthink less. And chances are, your 80% looks a lot like someone else’s 100%.

So, here’s your nudge: hit publish. Ship the thing. Then make it better.

Why We Stall (And What It’s Costing You)

If you’re like most direct sellers I coach, there’s something you’ve been sitting on:

  • Setting up a simple customer follow-up system
  • Sending your first customer newsletter
  • Creating an opt-in keyword for a text list

And yet... it lingers on the to-do list.

Why? Because perfectionism, fear, and overwhelm creep in.

You tell yourself you’ll do it when you have time. Or once you’ve figured out the perfect words. Or after you’ve seen what someone else does. And before you know it, six months have passed—and that thing that could’ve been serving your business this whole time is still sitting in draft mode.

Meanwhile, someone else with less experience and fewer resources just shipped it. And now they’re seeing results, getting feedback, and building momentum.

Let’s change that.

Done is Better Than Perfect

I know, I know. You want it to be good. You care deeply about your business and your customers. That’s a good thing!

But let me say this with love: no one can give feedback on something you never share.

Progress bar showing 80% complete with encouragement to publish.

Think of your first follow-up message. Will it be perfect? Probably not.
Will it be better than no message at all? Absolutely!

The best part? Once it’s sent, you can see what lands and improve from there.

When you ship something at 80%:

  • You start collecting data on what works.
  • You build confidence.
  • You stop overthinking and start DOING.

That’s where growth lives.

How to Put This Into Action

Here are three quick wins you can act on this week:

1. Set Up a Basic Follow-Up System

Log into Project Broadcast and create a simple thank-you message. That’s it. One message. You can always build a campaign later.

2. Send Your First Customer Newsletter

Even if it’s just three short sections—one personal note, one tip, one product spotlight. Don’t overthink it. Share your personality, show up with value, and send it out.

3. Create a Keyword Opt-In

Choose one thing to offer (like a recipe, tip sheet, or catalog), then set up a keyword in Project Broadcast and create the reply message. That’s all you need to start building your list.

Pick ONE of these and take 15 minutes to do it. (Set a timer if you need to!)

Then come back and let me know you shipped it!

Final Thoughts: Progress Over Perfection

Friend, your 80% effort has more impact than 0% sitting in your drafts. Give yourself permission to take messy action. You’ll feel a weight lift and your business will thank you.
